Soft tissue lasers allow us to deliver procedures with greater accuracy, providing more effective care and minimizing your child’s recovery time following treatment. Soft tissue lasers are a versatile tool and may be used in a variety of dental procedures, though our office uses them most frequently in frenectomies. Soft tissue lasers provide many benefits, including giving our pediatric dentists greater control during procedures, providing your child with a more accurate and effective treatment, a faster treatment time, a more comfortable overall treatment, and a more hygienic procedure.
A frenectomy is a type of treatment where our pediatric dentists and team modify the small tissue folds (known as frenulums) that connect one part of your child’s mouth to another. The two most common types of frenectomy are lingual frenectomy and labial frenectomy. The lingual frenulum connects the bottom of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. If this frenulum is abnormally short or thick, it can result in a condition known as a tongue tie. This prevents your child from chewing, eating, and speaking properly. A labial frenectomy is used to remove the frenulum that attaches the top lip to the gums above the front teeth. In some cases, this frenulum can cause a recession of the gums or contribute to a gap between the upper front teeth. The process for a frenectomy is quick and simple, and it can typically be completed in just one visit.
